What are macros?

Macronutrients, often referred to as ‘macros’, are the three essential nutrients—proteins, fats, and carbohydrates—that our bodies need in large amounts for energy production, growth, and numerous vital functions. Balancing these macros in your diet plays a significant role in overall health and achieving personal goals.

Proteins are the body’s building blocks, crucial for growth and repair of tissues such as muscles, skin, and hair. They also help you feel full, and are five times more thermogenic than carbohydrates and fats. One gram of protein equals four calories.

Fats, although often misunderstood, serve as a dense source of energy, aid in nutrient absorption, and are integral to hormone regulation. One gram of fat equals nine calories.

Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred energy source, powering everything from brain function to physical activity. Simple carbohydrates burn faster in the body, complex carbohydrates take longer to digest and breakdown. One gram of carbohydrates equals four calories.

There are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ foods, only choices that can be more or less beneficial depending on the context. Aim to choose nutrient-dense foods around 70% of the time – these are your high-quality fuels that keep your body running smoothly, supporting overall health and personal goals. The remaining 30% can be reserved for ‘fun’ foods – the ones that perhaps aren’t as nutrient-packed, but bring you joy and make eating a pleasure. It’s not about perfection, but about finding a flexible, enjoyable, and nourishing eating pattern that works for you. Together, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates each play distinct, essential roles in maintaining overall health and wellbeing.
